Amherst Muslim community stands by the unfortunate victim of fatal hit and run.

Members of Hampshire mosque demonstrated ‘proper Islamic etiquette‘ by showing their support for the victim of the collision, a Muslim woman who drove her car onto the wrong side of the road, killing another woman on a bicycle and leaving her shattered body to die.

Mosque plan inches forward

By Scott Merzbach (mailto:smerzbach@gazettenet.com)

Published on April 30, 2010

A smaller parking lot and stricter limits on the number of people allowed in the building at one time appear to be making neighbors in Amherst and Pelham more comfortable with the conversion of a former school on Harkness Road into the Hampshire Mosque.

Just plain wrong on mosque proposal

To the Bulletin: The Bulletin editorial of April 16 states, incorrectly, that the Harkness Road residents’ “main complaint” is that “having a house of worship on the road will increase traffic to a dangerous level.” The actual complaint is that, as traffic on Harkness Road is already at a dangerous level, significant additional traffic will make it even more dangerous.

On a personal note, we have had several cats and a dog killed by cars on Harkness Road, and I was hit by a car at the edge of my lawn. I would not call these events “specious.” As for the suggestion that the residents petition Town Hall for a sidewalk – good luck! Despite citing “mathematical calculations that projected a big traffic increase,” the Bulletin concludes, “based on the size of the mosque membership and the description of the programs, Muslims coming for worship and educational programs are not going to generate a lot of additional traffic.” Since the Bulletin did not dispute the calculations, which were based on information provided by the mosque to the Planning Board, the paper’s conclusion comes out of thin air.

Concerning the letter to the editor from Mr. and Mrs. Morse, their figures are incorrect.

To the Bulletin: The story and responses to the mosque that might be located on Harkness Road evoke memories of the Peace Pagoda arriving in Leverett almost 30 years ago.

At community meetings, residents voiced objections based on issues of traffic, septic systems, mysterious cult behavior and even overpopulation of our elementary school.

Offering Mosque a Welcoming Space – Amherst Bulletin editorial

Editorial: Offering mosque a welcoming space

Published on April 16, 2010 http://www.amherstbulletin.com/story/id/169943/
Editorial body copy:

When Hampshire County’s only mosque was seeking a new location outside of Amherst, Town Manager Larry Shaffer urged its leaders to stay in a town that is welcoming to all faiths and cultures. Unfortunately, the mosque has run up against some unwelcoming attitudes.

Members of the Muslim community are looking to buy a vacant L-shaped building and property at 264 Harkness Road. They would move their place of worship from cramped rented space in the Carriage Shops downtown to a rural, residential area on the eastern edge of town.

Charter school focuses on science – MassLive.com

Charter school focuses on science Thursday, November 19, 2009

By JEANETTE DeFORGE  jdeforge@repub.com

CHICOPEE – It is the Turkish language class that made Jazzmyn Anderson really like her new school.

“It is really, really fun and it has to do with my career,” the 12-year-old Springfield student said. “I’m going to teach English in Turkey or be an actress, but I will probably do the first one.”

Anderson, a seventh-grader, is one of 200 students from Springfield, Chicopee, Ludlow and West Springfield at the school. They are the first to attend the new Islamic Hampden Charter School of Science on Johnson Road that opened this fall.

The school, which now has grades six through nine, will add one grade every year until it reaches 12th grade and has 350 students, said Harun Celik, school director.

Director Harun Celik and his staff maintain very close relations with their students.

Organizers have been deliberate about their first year. They hired extra teachers so class sizes could be 18 students or smaller. Before school opened, staff also visited each students’ family, he said.

While the school has science in its title, Celik said it is not a place where students are constantly looking through microscopes. The school now has some electives, including Spanish and Turkish classes, and will add more soon.

“We have art, music, physical education … We might have a little more science than other schools,” he said.

Charter schools are public schools funded with tax money but are run by private organizations. The schools have more flexibility but all students must be selected through a lottery.

State senators on Tuesday approved Gov. Deval L. Patrick’s bill to lift a cap on charter schools in Holyoke, Springfield and other poorly performing school districts. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives.

Charter schools are often criticized because they fail to take the most difficult or needy students who have parents who cannot fill out applications or drive them to school. Celik said he tries to counteract that by providing a free bus, invites in parents and even offers them use of the computer lab if they do not have a computer at home….

Charter school focuses on science (and Islam) – MassLive.com

The Hampshire Charter School of Science has opened in Chicopee to help teach science and traditional Turkish Islamic values to young children. Harun and Dilyara Celik, working closely with other devotees under the instructions of their Sufi guru, Fethullah Gulen,  decided to take advantage of financial opportunities and tax benefits offered by the state and start the Hampden Charter School of Science to help highlight Turkish culture and reestablish Turkey as a world power for peace and Islam.

Mark Clinton defends the right of thugs to “try to shut you up, even if you don’t like it” at UMass protest for Free Speech

It appears that Holyoke Community College Professor Mark Clinton is more concerned about the rights of people who want to intimidate others and ‘shut them up’, than the rights of people to express their beliefs and speak freely and safely – without uninvited and thuggish interruptions meant to intimidate and terrorize.
