Hampden Charter School of Science
The Hampden Charter School of Science, which would open in the fall of 2009, is the only new charter school recommended for Western Massachusetts.
The school would serve 350 students from Chicopee, Ludlow, Springfield and West Springfield.
Volkan Yesilyurt, a chemistry research associate at UMass-Amherst, is a founding member of the School of Science, and said his group is confident of winning a charter. “We fully expect that our school will be granted,” he said.
Springfield School Superintendent Joseph P. Burke has warned that the school could negatively impact plans to revitalize the High School of Science and technology and create a related middle school. Burke said that he will continue to oppose the Hampden Charter School of Science, and will call Nellhaus to voice his concerns.
