New Yorker magazine cover offends local Muslims

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (abc40) — The cover of The New Yorker magazine has created a political firestorm. It shows Barack Obama in the Oval Office wearing Muslim garb.

The New Yorker says it is political satire. But locally, members of the Islamic Center of Western Massachusetts say they’re offended.

Imam Wissam Abdul Baki says the cover is saying to people that it’s bad to be a Muslim.

Even with Obama’s persistent denials, the latest Newsweek poll shows 44 percent of Americans believe Obama has some Muslim connection.

WEST SPRINGFIELD – The Islamic Center of Western Massachusetts has recently been the target of three attacks.

On March 21, the windows and windshield of a van parked at the center were smashed with a large stone while Islamic Society members were in the midst of their Friday prayer, Islamic Society President Dr. M. Saleem Bajwa said Tuesday. The front door of the center’s new hall was shattered with another large stone on March 26. On March 28, two large windows of the main building were smashed with stones. These windows are high off the ground and would require some force to break.

In addition to the vandalism, the Islamic Center received threatening telephone calls.

Local police and the FBI have been called in to investigate.

WEST SPRINGFIELD – People of different faiths gathered in front of the Islamic Center this evening to express support and censure the violence that the center has suffered in recent days.

Amherst College Chaplain Mohammed Abdelaal – Interfaith Walk for Climate Rescue

Hampshire mosque Chaplain Mohammed Abdelaal’s Interfaith Outreach efforts demonstrate his commitment to his mission.  The Islamic Chaplaincy Program teaches its graduates that …

Although chaplains often provide religious services for members of their own faith communities, the main role of a chaplain is to facilitate or accommodate the religious needs of all individuals in the institution in which he or she is working.

However, through the generosity of Amherst College, Brother Mohammed only serves there “as a Religious Advisor for Muslim students”, since his strict Islamic observance requires isolation from unclean things like kafirs, stool, urine, dead bodies, etc.

WESTFIELD – Imam Wissam Abdul Baki of the Islamic Society of Western Massachusetts will speak at the 21st annual Interfaith Breakfast Wednesday at Westfield State College.

The breakfast, sponsored by the Westfield State College Foundation, will start at 7:30 a.m. in Scanlon Banquet Hall.

The event serves as a fund-raiser for the Albert and Amelia Ferst Interfaith Chapel on campus and raises some $7,000-$10,000 for the Interfaith Center each year.

“The center gives students access to their faith on campus through regular religious services, study groups and organizations,” said college spokesman Craig Phelon.

Born in JubJunine, Lebanon, an area famous for its scenery and harmonious interfaith environment, Baki has served the Western Massachusetts area Islamic community since 1997.

He has considerable international experience in support of his ministry, serving in both the Middle East and Latin America before coming to the United States.

Baki earned a bachelor’s and advanced degrees at the Islamic University of Al-Madinah in Al-Munawarah and later served on the faculty, teaching Arabic, as well as media and communication.

He was an imam and teacher in Peru, Bolivia and Venezuela and has been active in many national and international interfaith programs. He is also a member of the Professional Consultation Committee at Baystate Medical Center.

Tickets for the breakfast are $12 each and a table for eight can be reserved for $96. For more information, contact the foundation office at 572-5489.
