In a remarkable speech exhorting Umass Muslim students to jihad (the spiritual jihad, of course), Dr. Ali Hazratji appears to obliquely promise them a share of the booty and loot when the ‘spoils are distributed’.

He stressed the importance of Qur’an 2:216 and told them that, even though they didn’t like it, fighting and warfare was ordained and prescribed for them, and that their prophets Sunnah promised a fair share of the booty and loot, just like at the Battle of Hunain.
Qur’an 2:216 – O you Muslims: as much as you dislike fighting, it is nonetheless, a prescriptive rule decreed as duty and moral obligation to defend your faith and to repel your enemy. It may happen that you dislike something and it proves beneficial to you and it may also happen that you like something and it proves harmful to you; Allah is Alimun but you are not.
BATTLE OF HUNAIN –
At Hunain a large number of Muslims retreated and did not kill their required number of Kafirs, ignoring their prophet and his Sunnah. Those that had not taken part in the battle were not entitled to a share of the enormous booty that fell into the hands of the Muslims.

- 40,000 sheep
- millions in silver and gold
- lots of other good stuff
Mohammed’s Sunnah required that the booty should be shared fairly only to those with ‘blood on their swords’ and not with those who choose not to fight.

STUDENT REACTION – What spoils of war?
Most of the students consider themselves moderate Muslims, and were quite surprised at Dr. Hazratji’s strict Islamic sermonizing and Qur’anic references. The students have little need for slaves, camels, or sheep. What spoils of war could he have been referring to?
