Representatives of the ummah worldwide would like to welcome the Muslim brothers and sisters coming to study in Western Massachusetts from Islamic countries around the world.
Unlike your homelands, where Islamists have been successful in ensuring that there is ‘no religion but Allah” and where the sunna of Islam’s prophet (sharia) is the highest law, Muslims are only a very small minority here and we must be very careful about what we do and how we act in order to accomplish our mission.
The following guidelines will help you maintain a proper Islamic lifestyle and help you succeed in advancing the cause of Islam.
YOUR NAME
Before filling out any more forms or applications, make a note of how your name is listed and spelled on your visa, immigration papers, and school records.
Exercise 1 – Fun with English – Write your ‘legal’ US name on a piece of paper. If Mohammed is not already a part of your name add it anywhere in the sequence – otherwise you can add Ali, Hussain, or Ahmed instead.
See how many possible spellings of Muhammed you can think of (e.g. Mohammed, Mohamed, Muhamed, Muhammad, Muhamad).
See how many variations of your other names you can discover. You can usually substitute an a for an e, a d for a b, a z for a s, etc. (e.g. Assab, Assad, Ahmed, Ahmad, Ahamed, Abida, Abeda, Hafiz, Hafis, Sheikh, Shiak)
Use a middle name whenever possible. You can also add an hyphen and suffix whenever you want (e.g. El-Hafid or Elhafid).
Putting the lesson into practice. From now on when you are filling out an application for a license or telephone, or speaking with someone from the media or police, see how many variations you can use. Don’t worry about the spaces for first, middle, or last names. Just mix them up and have fun. You can also have fun with common misspellings by changing a single letter.
Here’s some examples of how the professionals do it…
Hampshire College professor Syrian Omar S. Dahi’s name was changed to Omar S. Eahi for the pro-Palestinian Arab rally for the illegal ‘Freedom Flotilla’ to Gaza in Springfield last summer because foreign nationals are often prohibited from participating in political protests.
Dr. Kimat-Gul Khatak’s name was changed to Kimal-Gul Khatak while protesting in Boston against the United States.
Sheikh can easily be mis-spelled Shiak (Surryyia Shiak). There are many other possible variations, Tahir Malik Sheihk, Tony Sheihk.
Coming soon – Part II – finding Halal food in the Pioneer Valley – Muslims know how disgusting it is to even think about eating in public cafeterias or at school facilities among kafirs and being forced to share table space, silverware, or cutlery with them. It is prohibited by all Islamic authorities.
For now be sure NOT to visit the Muslim owned Amanouz or Mosaic Cafe in Northampton until you verify whether or not the food is Halal. The food may not be up to your standards.
Hampshire mosque director and Amherst health safety employee Javeria Mir may be able to help you avoid hazards and contamination.
