Federal Judge witholds bail for accused terrorist Tarek Mehanna with UMassAmherst MSA ties

March 2, 2011 – A federal judge has denied bail for accused Sudbury terrorist Terek Mehanna, despite the protests of the UMass Amherst MSA and Bilal Mirza who has “known Mehanna for more than 10 years. Both attended the Islamic Center of Boston in Wayland as children.”

Acting US Attorney Michael K. Loucks also released two undated photos of Mehanna smiling at Ground Zero in New York City with friends, as well as excerpts of conversations he allegedly had online in which he expressed admiration for Al Qaeda, the 19 hijackers who participated in the 9/11 attacks, and Osama bin Laden. “I look to him . . . as being my real father, in a sense,’’ Mehanna allegedly wrote on April 28, 2006.

Mirza described Mehanna as a studious man of gentle faith.

Mehanna is a charismatic community leader who helps youth groups, facilitates study circles and enjoys action films” ” Mirza shook his head at the allegations and the media coverage of the court proceedings

” It’s unsettling. There’s this automatic assumption of guilt,” said Mirza.

Chaplain Abdelaal  coordinates the activities of Hazratji’s mosque with the UMass  MSA to ensure that its members understand proper Islamic etiquette.
